For beginner it would be scary to install Linux on existing Win XP system. But actually it's very simple. I got Kubuntu Live CD and installer by requesting free distribution from internet.
The easiest way is to have different partition for Linux system. I don't know whether it is possible to install in the same partition. The step is below :
1. Boot your computer from Kubuntu CD installation.
2. Follow the instruction to install or start Kubuntu.
3. Live kubuntu will be launched. you will find a shortcut to install the system in hard drive. Click it.
4. You will be prompted to manage in which partition you will install your Kubuntu. You have to prepare space for root directory (/) and swap.
5. Go on and your Kubuntu will be installed successfully.
6. Try restarting to see how boot loader appear. You will find that you can still use your win xp instead of Kubuntu.
7. you can edit your boot loader menu by editing file /boot/grub/menu.lst
Those are the first step. The next step is exploring your Kubuntu. installing other package needed such as libxine1-ffmpg to play your mp3 file.
